Chicago Cubs catcher Willson Contreras is ready for the MLB trade deadline to pass, as he's been floated in rumors for years now.
The Cubs haven't made a substantial contract offer to Contreras since 2018 — two seasons after he helped lead Chicago to its first World Series in 108 years.
Since then, it's been pretty much a forgone conclusion that, at some point, Contreras would be traded away for prospects. Leave it to Chicago's front office to wait until the last possible moment.
Contreras remains on the team, and he is still contributing at a high level. The 30-year-old made the NL All-Star team this season and, despite a recent slump, is still slashing .252/.365/.453, and is one of the best backstops in all of baseball.
But that doesn't mean the small things don't get to him.
Willson Contreras impacted by Cubs trade rumors
Contreras opened up to reporters following Sunday's game, in which the Cubs lost 4-0 to the Giants.
To be honest, this is the first time in my career that I'm in this position, Contreras said, per the Chicago Tribune. It's not easy. I just want this to be over. If they're going to trade me, they're going to trade me. If they don't want to trade me, they don't. But I just want this day to pass and keep focused on playing baseball. I just want it to be over.
Manager David Ross had echoed this point a few days prior to Contreras' remarks, saying that the trade talks were getting to him perhaps more than he was letting on.
We'll see what happens, Contreras said. It's going to be a long day. It's been a long, long, long week. A long, long month for me. But I'm ready for this to be over with.
On Tuesday at 6 p.m. ET, it'll finally be over with. Odds are, Contreras will be on his way to a new team by then.
