The Atlanta Braves traded for Los Angeles Angels closer Raisel Iglesias at the deadline buzzer. Here's the full trade:
The Angels once stood at the top of the American League West. Oh, that was a fun early-season storyline.
Then, a historic losing streak cost them at spot and manager Joe Maddon his job. On Tuesday, they were definitive trade deadline sellers, dealing Noah Syndergaard and Raisel Iglesias at the buzzer.
Syndergaard was traded to the Phillies to help buoy their rotation in a division he's quite familiar with. Iglesias, meanwhile, is headed to Atlanta, in part to take over for the recently-departed Will Smith, who was traded to Houston.
Raisel Iglesias trade details: Braves, Angels
Iglesias has a 4.04 ERA on the season, as well as a 3.17 FIP with 16 saves. Those numbers aren't terrible, but he's been far from reliable at the closer position this year.
If you think that's a lacking return for your closer, then you're absolutely right.
Iglesias was clearly going to be dealt at this year's deadline, and rather than hold onto him for nothing, the Angels felt pressured to do…something.
Chavez is 38 years old, and Davidson hasn't shown much promise in the Atlanta organization.
As for Iglesias, he'll slide into the back end of the Braves bullpen, and should immediately become a fan favorite. Kenley Jansen is clearly cemented as the team's closer, but Iglesias could carve out a role for himself with a solid couple of months in the ATL.
