Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin is reportedly leaving Oxford for The Plains, taking the Auburn gig in the process.
Lane Kiffin has come a long way since being left on the tarmac by USC. Stops on the Alabama redemption tour and now leading Ole Miss suggest he's ready for his next premier head coaching gig.
Per Jon Sokoloff of WCBI News — who covers both Mississippi State and Ole Miss — Kiffin is expected to announce he's leaving for Auburn on Friday.
Ole Miss HC Lane Kiffin plans to step down as the Rebels coach Friday and head to Auburn to become the Tigers next head coach, according to sources, Sokoloff said in a tweet. Sources say the Tigers haven't officially offered the job to anyone yet.
So…the Lane Train is leaving Oxford…but the team hasn't offered the job to Kiffin yet?
Something about this sounds a little sketchy.
Is Lane Kiffin leaving Ole Miss for Auburn?
While I'm not one to question Sokoloff's reporting, it's always best to wait for confirmation on such a matter before assuming a deal is done. As for Kiffin, it appears he's just getting ready for The Egg Bowl.
Perhaps Kiffin could take a brief break from his late night reading to let us in on his future plans. If not for the Ole Miss fans, then for the players, surely. Several Rebels players admitted that Kiffin has yet to address his long-term future with the team.
For a head coach who has a history of being, um, let's go with flighty, Kiffin owes an explanation before this gets out of control.
If direct messages don't work, nothing will.
Kiffin is one of the more sought-after coaches in all of college football for a reason. Should he head to Auburn, it's unclear what that would mean for current interim coach Cadillac Williams.
