If the Atlanta Braves want to turn the Max Fried rumors back on, these four teams should be looking to acquire him.
Last week, there were some Max Fried rumors about the Atlanta Braves possibly shopping the 28-year-old lefty in a trade. Mr. Reliable has gone 54-25 for them since 2017 while adding a 3.09 ERA. He has been especially good in the last three years, culminating in a runner-up finish for the Cy Young last year.
Max Fried rumors caught many people off-guard as the Braves seem to have an obvious need for him. Some cold water has been splashed on the speculation, but they could always change their mind. Fried has two years left of control and could bring the Braves something pretty awesome back in return.
If the Braves change their mind and decide to trade Fried, what kind of monster trade package could it take?
1) Max Fried rumors: A trade package from the Orioles
The Baltimore Orioles should be a threat to deal away some of their young talent for established players. They haven't spent a lot this offseason. Could they be gearing up for a big splash via trade? They definitely have some intriguing pieces. Exactly what can they offer the Braves to get a deal done?
The Braves are able to acquire an outfielder in Austin Hays along with left-handed pitching prospect DL Hall, outfielder Colton Cowser, and infielder Connor Norby. It's a solid return for Atlanta and doesn't do too much damage to the future of the Orioles franchise. They would, of course, need to immediately look into extending Fried to make this a worthwhile deal.
In addition to adding to the roster, the Braves are able to dump a portion of Eddie Rosario's salary onto the Orioles. The 2021 postseason hero is owed another $9 million next season. There is even less of a need for him if they acquire Hays. Clearing out the roster space would be a big help, especially if they continue paying Marcell Ozuna.
Hays is a left field upgrade for the Braves with Cowser waiting in the wings to compete for innings as well. Hall would be a bullpen or rotation contender soon enough. He may need to wait another season before getting any significant playing time.
With Rosario gone, the Braves will have another move they can consider making. Maybe it's one more for depth. It couldn't hurt to add to the bullpen further.
2) Max Fried rumors: A trade package from the Cardinals
The St. Louis Cardinals are a win-now team that might have the best number of total assets to swing a major trade. Fried isn't the man to overpay for, but a reasonable addition for them to make. What can they offer the Braves to make the Max Fried rumors come true?
This deal focuses heavily on the Braves hoping Tyler O'Neill rebounds from his poor 2022 season. Atlanta gets their upgrade at a position of need. The Cardinals add a stud pitcher to their rotation and someone to consider extending shortly after.
Cooper Hjerpe is the 22nd overall pick from last year's draft so the Braves are getting a strong young player back, too. Alec Willis, a lesser pitching prospect for the Cardinals, also goes to the Braves in this deal.
Finally, there's Nolan Gorman. He doesn't seem to have much of a path for more regular playing time in St. Louis. His destiny could be as a utlity man. Every team can use one of those.
Adding Fried to the roster does put the Cardinals in a spot to maybe deal away another starting pitcher. Steven Matz is someone they would probably like to move on from. Short of dumping his salary, could they maybe look to move Jack Flaherty instead and possibly bolster the club in a different way?
The Cardinals have a ton of ways to get creative with building their roster. Their best way to improve the team is to use a player like O'Neill. They have plenty of other options to replace him already on the roster. Give Alec Burleson a shot or seek out other left field options in separate transactions.
3) Max Fried rumors: A trade package from the Twins
The Minnesota Twins came up short last season in their quest to win the American League Central then storm into the playoffs. Their collapse was due to several reasons. Now without Carlos Correa, the team should be in the market to make some big moves. One of them could involve trading for Max Fried. It would give them a youngish arm for the rotation. What would it cost to acquire him?
Now that Dansy Swanson has officially left the Braves organization for the Chicago Cubs, the team can start looking at shortstops of the future. The Twins have quite a few on the farm and within the organization. Royce Lewis would be a nice addition for the Braves, but knee surgery in 2022 could have them pivoting toward Brooks Lee instead. Lee is currently the 32nd best prospect in baseball, the Braves snag him plus outfielder Max Kepler and pitcher Bailey Ober from the MLB roster. Prospect Emmanuel Rodriguez also changes uniforms in this deal.
In 2023, this means Vaughn Grissom stays as their shortstop. The Twins gain an incredible pitcher while the Braves look to move everyone up one spot and allow Ober to compete with others for the fifth starter spot. Kepler gives them a corner outfielder looking to rebound from a down year in 2022. Rodriguez serves the purpose of giving the Braves something to look forward to in the future as well.
When it comes to a hypothetical Max Fried trade, the Twins should allow them to pick from any of the shortstops they would like. Minnesota has a couple of options. The Braves should get to pick which one they want.
4) Max Fried rumors: A trade package from the Diamondbacks
Maybe more of a sneaky team to look to acquire Max Fried, the Arizona Diamondbacks have a surplus of young players they could trade to get better right now. It won't be Corbin Carroll or Druw Jones headed to Atlanta. The Braves can still get some good players to contribute now and in the future.
This is a pretty big trade. The Braves land the 12th best prospect in baseball, shortstop Jordan Lawlar, plus pitcher Ryne Nelson and porspect Jorge Barrosa. Nelson is a guy who could contend for a spot in the Braves rotation or at least spend a year as a depth piece. He's a pretty big part in this deal even if he isn't the headlining prospect with Lawlar taking on that role.
Nelson looked impressive in his three starts for Arizona last year. The Diamondbacks could give the Braves a choice of him or Drey Jameson. They're equal in a lot of ways.
Lawlar is the big get for Atlanta. They may end up perfectly happy with Vaughn Grissom as their shortstop. This shouldn't stop them from looking at improvements. Lawlar is considered one of the best shortstop prospects in baseball right now. The Diamondbacks are looking for a better repeat of history when they traded Dansby Swanson to the Braves for Shelby Miller all of those years ago. Will this one work out better for them?
Fried is much more accomplished than Miller was at the time. He'd create one of the best trios to the start the season with him, Zac Gallen, and Merrill Kelly. Maybe Madison Bumgarner decides to turn back the clock and give them an excellent year.
